Odds are you’ve heard about astrology (and probably even co-star) before and likely have strong opinions about it. And if your opinion is that astrology is a scam or a load of sh*t, please keep reading because I’m going to explain why I like it so much.
So if you’ve been living under a rock for your entire life astrology is a system that looks at the positions of the stars and planets to predict/determine/interpret human events. Most people know what their astrological sign is (or at least what their sun sign is–that’s what people generally refer to as “their sign”), even if they don’t know about or believe in astrology. Now, I’m not going to tell you you have to believe in astrology–that’s not my style. But I am going to tell you how I use my horoscope and star chart as well as how to read your star chart.
I really like astrology because it gives you a way to look at the challenges you’re facing in your life and gives you strategies on how to tackle them. My star chart feels very accurate–skeptics will likely say because they’re written to be vague and specific at the same time, which is fair, but doesn’t mean it’s useless–and helps me pay attention to parts of my personality that can get out of hand or in my own way. For example, I’m a Virgo, which means I’m pretty Type A and detail-oriented. But this can mean that I can get bogged down by the details of my day-to-day and forget to look at the big picture. (Which if you know me is stupid true.) So it’s really helpful for me to read my horoscope in the morning and have it remind me that there is a big picture and that all my focusing on the details will pay off or that it’s okay to let some little things go.
It’s also helpful for giving ways to approach relationships (all relationships, not just romantic ones). You can read a million different interpretations on how the signs interact with each other, but in the end they’re all basically giving you strategies on how to get along with people with different personalities. And that’s definitely helpful.
Finally, it’s fun. There’s no doubt that it’s fun to talk with your friends about your star signs and astrological charts. All you nerds who swear by the Myers-Briggs personality types can’t say anything about astrology because it’s the same thing. Just wasn’t made for the corporate world (which makes it better IMO but whatever). It’s fun to have something to jokingly blame when everything in your life seems to be going wrong. It’s fun to have an additional piece of information to talk sh*t about a friend’s ex with. And it’s fun to read other people’s charts and say “oh that’s why they’re like that.”
Now that you’re undoubtedly on the astrology train due to my convincing arguments, here’s how to read your star chart (or natal chart or astrological chart). Star charts are basically an expansion on your sun sign. While your sun sign takes into account the day and month you were born, a star chart looks at everything to determine where the stars and planets were in the sky when you were born. It takes into account the geographic location, exact date, and exact time of your birth to makes a more accurate picture.
There are three major parts of the star chart: sun sign, moon sign, and rising sign.
Your sun sign is (according to Co-Star, which we’ll get into in a minute) what “determines your ego, identity and ‘role’ in life. It’s at the core of who you are.” Your sun sign is the sign that everyone means when they ask you what your sign is. It’s the sign that your friends think you are.
Your moon sign is what “rules your emotions, moods, and feelings.” It’s the sign you likely think of yourself as since it’s who you truly are when you’re alone or truly comfortable. If you don’t identify with your sun sign it’s probably because you’re super comfortable all the time so you might want to look to your moon sign instead.
Your rising (or ascendant) sign is “the ‘mask’ you present to people. It can be seen in your personal style and how you come off to people when you first meet.” If your rising sign is the same as your sun sign then you’re probably easier for other people to read because you’re not trying to hide who you are (this is not an attack, it’s more like when you put on your professional face for an interview or fake being an extrovert for a friend’s party–everyone does it).
If all of this makes you curious to explore astrology more then I wholeheartedly recommend you download the app Co-Star. You can input all your birth information and it’ll create your star chart for you along with helpful blurbs about each planet or star along with what they mean. It gives you a daily horoscope (with a salty af push notification that’s the subject of many a twitter complaint) as well. The coolest part of this app for me is that it lets you add your friends. So it’s edging in on social media territory, but when you add your friend you can see how their star chart matches up with yours. It rates each different sign with different levels of ease for getting along. And will give you ways to deal with the different personality types. If you want to add me on Co-Star, my name is @joslin and I’ll 100% connect with you!
Sorry this post is so long, but in my defense, Co-Star did tell me to talk someone’s ear off today.
xoxo,
J
