I pretty much wear espadrilles through the entire summer. And I start wearing them as early as possible so really it’s more of an April through September sort of thing. They just say sunny weather and laid back attitude while still being put together, which is what I’d like to pretend I am. To back up for a second, espadrilles are shoes that have a (usually) canvas upper and a braided rope sole. They can come in so many styles but what makes them espadrilles is the braided rope sole.
Last spring I discovered a brand of espadrilles that quickly became my go-to for summer shoes, and is slowly but surely taking over as my go-to for all shoes. Soludos makes amazing shoes–I have a growing collection of their shoes (I’m not going to share the exact number because it’s lowkey embarrassing how obsessed I am), but I love them so much.
I originally bought the classic lace-up espadrille wedge and these are some of the best shoes I’ve ever owned. They take a little bit to break in–mostly on the top of your foot where the toe cover rubs–but once they’re broken in they are so comfortable! I’ve worn them walking around the cobblestone streets in Georgetown without any issues at all, which is pretty shocking because those sidewalks are terrible.
I also have the mules and, my favorite, the platform smoking slippers. The platform smoking slippers are ideal because they feel like summery sneakers but still give you some height and have really cute, fun embroidery on them! I love that the shoes don’t have the same embroidery, but instead are coordinating. And it doesn’t hurt that people are always complimenting me on these shoes whenever I wear them.
Soludos changes up their style offerings every season, so if you see a pattern you like, it’s really best to snag them ASAP before they disappear. Me? I’ve got my eye on these La Vie En Rose smoking slippers or these All You Need smoking slippers once my lemon ones finally decide they’re done. They’re holding up remarkably well considering I’ve worn them most sunny days since I got them last summer.
A word of caution to my fellow espadrille lovers: these shoes should absolutely not get wet. Water will ruin the jute rope sole of the shoes, so if there’s even a chance of rain in the forecast it’s better to wear a different pair of shoes. (Or be super extra and bring your espadrilles for the indoor portion of the day and a more waterproof pair for walking outside!)
xoxo,
J
