I spent this past weekend in New York City with some of my best friends. We realized we hadn’t really spent a significant amount of time together since we were all together for a wedding about three years ago! So we started planning a girls trip. I must say, I’m still kind of shocked we managed to pull it off but I’m so thankful that we made the time to plan and show up in the same space for a long weekend.
It was so great to be able to spend time together just the four of us and really truly catch up and check in on each other. You know those friendships you have where you can always just seem to pick up the conversation where you left off, no matter how much time has passed? That’s how this weekend was. Continuing the conversations we’ve been having since college. Okay I’m going to hit pause on my gushing about how much I love my friends and talk logistics and details for a minute.
As I mentioned before, we tried to have a loose schedule for what to do and where we wanted to go. We ended up getting tickets to visit the 9/11 memorial museum and to see Avenue Q (extremely different vibes), but the rest of the time we had a few places we wanted to check out and made our decisions as we went. There were obviously some ups and downs but overall I think we all felt great about what we were able to see!
Two words of advice from me based on this trip: no matter what the forecast says, always pack a pair of pants. I’m a dress person so I packed a bunch of dresses and no jeans, based on the forecast saying it would be nice and sunny. Well. It rained and was chilly and cloudy for a good portion of the time we were there so a pair of jeans would’ve been smart to pack. Second, don’t trust the food recommendations from someone who works with influencers. We got a brunch recommendation from a friend and, while the place was truly cute and perfect for Instagramming, the experience wasn’t ideal. Mostly it ended up eating up a lot of time without much benefit.
We decided to stay in Brooklyn (which was a little far away, but was much more affordable than any place in Manhattan), so we did breakfast in Brooklyn both days before heading into Manhattan to explore. It was fun to check out the physical locations of so many online brands that I love (Glossier, Everlane, Away, Bumble) in SoHo and equally fun just to walk around and pop into cute places. On Saturday we decided to chance going to Momofuku for lunch and OMG was that an excellent idea! The lines were much sorter for lunch and the food was incredible. Plus we got to stop at Milk Bar after for dessert which is always great. We wandered a bit through Central Park and popped into the flagship Kate Spade store and generally just explored the city.
My favorite moments of the weekend were the moments when we just got a chance to slow down and talk. As much as I love New York City, I love spending time with my best friends more. So I was happiest when we sat down to have long meals or drinks together (shoutout to the rooftop bar we stopped at that had great drinks with a view of the Empire State Building) and when we were back in our Airbnb just hanging out. Another highlight for me was when we discussed our natal charts (from astrology) and did tarot card readings. I loved it because it allowed us to get even deeper into our feelings and generally just led to a lot of truth bombs being dropped. I realize this may sound kind of weird, but they were good truths and if you can’t be honest with your best friends then I don’t think you’re really friends.
Anyway. I had a blast and I’m already looking forward to the next girls weekend. We agreed to try to make this an annual event–though I’m pulling for 2020’s reunion to be in a beach house so it’s more about the time than the space.
