Before I started my new job I got a text from a friend asking what I wanted to do with my last week of freedom (freedom to do whatever I wanted during the weekdays). We quickly decided to go wine tasting on a weekday but didn’t really want to drive out to the middle of Virginia to do it. Thankfully, there is one winery inside of DC: District Winery.
First off, District Winery is gorgeous. It’s in Navy Yard right on the water and you can tell as soon as you walk in that it’s the perfect event space. All of the external walls are windows so there’s light everywhere and an amazing view of the water. The bartender told us they’re always booked solid for weddings and honestly I didn’t even have to go upstairs to believe him.
Unfortunately, District Winery only does tastings at their bar (which is pretty small so I’m thankful we were there in the middle of the day in the middle of the week), but the tasting itself was fun! And the bartender (sommelier?) was engaging and funny and even told me about a coupon, which never happens. We ended up getting two tastings and two bottles of wine for $30. Wild, right?
District Winery makes all of their wines in their building in DC, but they bring in their grapes from all over. Mostly California and Washington–so I felt right at home–but they do have one wine that’s made with more local Virginia grapes. Their wine definitely isn’t the best that I’ve tasted, but if you’re looking for a fun and beautiful place to grab a glass or three of wine and relax without driving for an hour, this is perfect.
After our tasting we walked across the little grassy park to get ice cream at Ice Cream Jubilee. They have such fun flavors–think Salt & Straw or Jenni’s type flavors (if you’re in locations where those shops exist). Since it was so gorgeous outside we decided to go back to District Winery after our dessert-first adventure and sit outside with more wine and a cheese plate. Thankfully, we were there for happy hour menu which I would highly recommend. I’m a huge fan of happy hours. Not only because the prices are so much better, but because I love trying different appetizers and happy hour is a great excuse to do just that.
I’ll definitely be back to District Winery–especially since they specialize in rosé! Stay tuned for more wine tasting adventures.
xoxo,
J
