Last month Girl’s Night In shared this piece they wrote about how different people organize their phones–specifically how different people’s home screens look. I thought this was brilliant, and followed their lead by tweeting out a picture of my home screen to share how I keep my phone. Unsurprisingly, many of my friends were ~shocked~ at the state of my phone, but I swear there’s a method to my madness.
As you can see, I organize my apps by color and keep them in folders together. I also don’t have anything on the bottom section of my phone. While it may seem like total chaos to you, it actually helps me find apps.
First, when I’m looking for an app I picture it in my mind so it makes sense for me to have them organized by color–it immediately narrows my search. Second, some apps like to change their icon with the seasons or with updates. When this happens it reminds me to go through my apps to reorganize them and to do a sort of digital purge and delete the apps that I don’t really use. This helps keep my phone clean and organized.
Finally, I simply like the way my screen looks like this. A lot of things on your phone can be stress-inducing so if there’s something that can be done to reduce this even a little bit, it’s something I’m going to try. It’s so much more calming for me to look at a screen that’s color-coded than it is to look at a screen that’s really visually chaotic, even if there’s a logic to the way it’s organized.
As a last note–my background is by Riley Sheehey, a local artist who does beautiful watercolor illustrations and is generous enough to post her work on her Instagram so that it can be screenshotted and used as a phone background. Please check her out and support her–I’ve got my eye on a few of her pieces to add to my apartment as well!
