Mud masks are my second favorite types of face masks. Full disclosure that they’re my second favorite because they’re a little (or sometimes a lot, depending on how bad you are at washing your face–I’m pretty bad) messy. This is why I do mud masks less often than sheet masks, but there are some skin situations that a sheet mask just can’t address. Mud masks are best for when you need a deep clean, like when you feel your face getting clogged. I especially like to use them when I come home after traveling or when I’m about to get my period and feel my pores clogging up.
This Kiehl’s clay mask is my all-time favorite mud mask. I love it because it is truly deep cleansing, it smells pretty good (especially for a mud mask, some of those can smell like, well, mud), and is pretty easy to apply. Mud (and clay) masks are pretty self-explanatory in the application department but just in case:
- Wash and tone your face. Yes, this mask is a deep clean but you wouldn’t mop the floor until you swept it, would you?
- Apply the mud mask everywhere (avoid your eyebrows though, just in case). You can use a brush if you want but I hate cleaning brushes so I just use my fingers.
- Leave on your face until it dries. Sometimes this will take a little longer than the package says, depending on how thick you applied it.
- Wash off the mask. Pro-tip: do an initial rinse with just water and then remove the rest of the mask using a makeup wipe. This makes everything easier.
- Depending on how your face feels you might want to do your moisturizer routine now. Mud masks can dry out your skin so it’s important to check and make sure it’s not too dry.
