I think most people have a signature outfit. Some people have one intentionally but I think most of us don’t even notice that we gravitate towards the same outfit or style until someone else points it out. That’s how I realized I have a signature outfit–when a friend texted me saying that she was wearing a “Joslin outfit” along with an outfit picture! Turns out that my signature outfit is wearing dresses with sneakers.
I probably could have told you this if I had sat and thought about it for a while but hearing someone else say it made me laugh–and reflect on why I wear this outfit and how many different ways I wear this outfit. I guess when it boils down to it I’m not repeating the same exact outfit over and over as my “signature outfit,” but more using it as a formula to build a majority of my outfits. (Of course, this is not at all the outfit I wear in the wintertime in DC because it’s cold cold cold and I don’t like tights.)
Having a go-to outfit blueprint is such a time saver and helps alleviate the stress of getting ready in the morning. Dresses with sneakers is my go-to outfit because it’s easy and comfortable but looks polished and put together. It can swing more casual or more professional depending on which pieces I choose to match together. I have four pairs of sneakers that I usually switch between: lowtop converse, Allbirds sneakers, rose gold slip-ons from Kate Spade, and espadrille “smoking slippers” from Soludos. The Kate Spade shoes are my “dressier” option–the color and the little ruffles make me feel like they’re much fancier than they actually are. As much as I love wearing heels and boots, sneakers are infinitely better for walking around new cities. And they make it so I don’t have to deal with commuting shoes.
Dresses are an obvious choice for me as well. Like sneakers, they’re comfortable (especially in the DC summers when it’s so hot and humid) and they’re easy. One piece is all you need for a whole outfit–you don’t have to worry about matching a top and bottoms. They’re perfect because everything thinks you’re extremely put together and dressed up when all you did was pull the least-wrinkled dress off of a hanger. I think this is my signature outfit because it’s quick, easy, comfortable, and can easily work for exploring, work, brunch, or date night. It’s an outfit that never fails to make me feel confident because it’s comfortable while still being cute and even flirty.
Take a minute to think about your signature outfit. Is it jeans and a tank and a blazer? Colorful leggings and an oversized top? A cardigan over every shirt you own? Think about it and let me know!
xoxo,
J
