As much as I love dressing up I love getting home and putting on my pajamas even more. It’s such a simple thing but it immediately lets my mind and my body know that it’s allowed to relax and slow down and (as someone who really struggles to fall asleep) finally go to bed. I think everyone has pajama sets when they’re little but for some reason as we get older those pajama sets of pants and a coordinating graphic tee (or the fully matching pants and button up shirt) transform into yoga pants and whatever t-shirt you got for free at an event. Until about two years ago I was fully guilty of wearing some assortment of free t-shirts, sweatpants, leggings, or yoga pants to relax and sleep in. Then, I rediscovered the pajama set.
I first bought a pajama set because I wanted new pajamas for Christmas so that I wouldn’t feel as terrible about the hundreds of pictures my family is sure to take on Christmas morning of everyone straight out of bed opening presents. So I found a flannel set that had Christmas-y plaid and gold thread and I loved them. I wore them way beyond when it was really acceptable to be wearing Christmas-themed clothing and I tried to justify it by telling myself they were really only flannel and flannel is a year-round thing in some places. When that lie stopped working I caved and bought another set.
I’ve seen the Instagram ads for those gorgeous silk pajama sets and maybe when I make it big I’ll splurge because they do truly look incredible, but for now I stay on the (much) cheaper end of the spectrum. The most important things about pajama sets are that they’re comfortable and YOU think they’re cute. Unlike daytime clothing, not many people are #blessed enough to see your pajamas, so you don’t have to worry about anyone else loving them. I’ve found my favorite pajama sets at Nordstrom Rack and Nordstrom on sale. Since I spend about half my life in my pajamas I don’t feel bad spending a bit of money on them but I don’t want to feel like I’m getting ripped off either. Nordstrom Rack has a pretty good selection of sets online that are super affordable–I’m pretty sure my set from there was no more than $30. (Regular) Nordstrom also sells some great pajama sets, but you have to look a little closer at the prices on these. Wait for a sale at Nordstrom if you’re looking to get a cute pajama set–they’re regularly included in the sales.
In a weird way wearing a full pajama set makes me feel like I have my life together a little more. It makes me feel fancy and put together and adult and sometimes even a little bougie. My favorite pajamas are short sets with matching button up shirts (long or short sleeved, it doesn’t really matter) because I think they’re cuter and because pajama pants seem to always shrink in length but not anywhere else. The shorts also mean I can wear the same pajama sets in the summer and the winter–I just use more blankets in the winter so my legs don’t freeze. Right now my favorite set is the pink version–of course–of this set from J Crew (that I got on sale).
Wearing a pajama set is also my ideal set up for doing face masks. For me, the peak self care move is a pajama set, fuzzy socks, wine (with a straw if necessary), and a face mask. Honestly, the pajama set just elevates the entire situation from feeling like you’re slacking at home to recognizing that you are having a moment to yourself.
I hope this inspires you to find a full pajama set and lean in to that relaxation.
xoxo,
J
