As I was planning out my 2019 in my bullet journal at the start of the year I realized that I had bought tickets for concerts for the first three months of the year. I joked that I should make it a goal to go to a concert every month in 2019 and even looked into trying to make that happen but it turns out there aren’t any artists that I want to see coming to DC in April. But even without going to a show next month I’ve really enjoyed taking the time to go see live music and I think it’s helped me start my year off right!
In January I went to see Kacey Musgraves’ Oh What A World Tour at The Anthem. I’ve been a fan for a while now but hadn’t seen her live yet. I had also never been to a country concert despite growing up in an area that’s definitely more country than anything else. Let me just say that Kacey did not disappoint. I know she’s not traditional country by any means (honestly that’s probably why I like her so much) but she absolutely brought the country music vibe to the middle of the city in the dead of winter! And can I just say that I want to wear literally everything that she’s worn on tour? So many colors and sequins and jumpsuits–she truly takes her outfit cues from Dolly Parton! If you don’t know who Kacey Musgraves is first you should google her because you’ve been missing out, but she’s a fun pop-country artist who is pushing to make country music a more hospitable place for women and the LGBTQ community–groups that are alternately ignored or attacked by traditional country music. If all of this hasn’t sold you on Kacey then I should also mention that her songs alternately make me smile and cry and they’re all amazing. Go listen to Rainbow right now, thanks.
February’s concert was LP at the Lincoln Theater. No, not the theater where Lincoln was shot–that’s the Ford Theater. I literally don’t even know how to describe LP’s voice other than to say it’s amazing and just…that range is incredible. Like this singer can belt and seamlessly throws whistles and whistle notes. A good introduction to LP’s music: Girls Go Wild and Dreamcatcher. You’ll be sold immediately.
March’s concert was actually last night and it was… Ariana Grande’s Sweetener tour at Capitol One Arena! This was my second time seeing her in concert (I also went to the Dangerous Woman tour at Capitol One) and it was just as amazing. This bitch can sing and she can definitely put on a show! The costumes, set design, choreography, and just everything is made to get everyone–even the Ariana skeptic–on board and having a great time. And if you’ve ever had any doubt that she can sing, seeing her live will quiet that in a second. It was a great time and I highly recommend seeing her live if you can.
I’m still on the lookout for concerts to attend in literally any of the coming months so let me know if there’s a tour I should hit up!
xoxo,
J
