About two months ago Brandon and I got a puppy! You probably remember my post the day after we adopted Scout, but I realized I hadn’t updated you all on her progress (or struggles) since then. So here we go.
Overall she’s doing really well. She’s (mostly) house trained so she’s really only had a few accidents in our apartment and we learned pretty quickly what her signal for needing to go outside is. Honestly, I’m pretty shocked that at 7 months she’s already going to our second floor apartment door and waiting to be let out, go down the hall and down the stairs before going to the bathroom.
She started going to her training classes three weeks ago too and I’m proud to say she is not the biggest disaster in the class! She’s great at sitting (such a lame accomplishment but let’s be honest it’s pretty hard for a puppy), and will even sit at every intersection during her walks. We’re working on other skills, but she’s generally a fast learner since she will do literally anything for a treat. My goal for her training is really to get her to be calm and well-behaved enough to be able to take her to my ever-growing list of dog-friendly spots in DC for happy hours or brunches.
I think my favorite thing about Scout is that she gets so cuddly when she’s tired. Brandon has been bringing her to meet me after my spin classes (about a 20 minute walk away from home) and by the time we get home after class she’s exhausted. So she’ll just hop up on the couch and snuggle up next to Brandon to fall asleep. It’s beyond cute and almost makes you forget just how naughty she can really be.
A few days after we brought her home we realized just how dangerously tricky this little pup is. Her intelligence in her puppy training classes also comes out in her ability to make trouble. She learned super quickly how to open her crate and sneak out. Which Brandon found out when he came home and found her sitting on the couch next to an empty liter of olive oil that she’d drank and dumped on the couch. So. We’ve now figured out how to rig her crate to make it more difficult to escape, but it doesn’t always work. Guess there’s a price to be paid for having a smart dog.
We also discovered that she’s allergic to peanut butter. In an event that is way too gross for me to share with y’all. I will just say that she won’t be getting any leftover peanut butter jars and we’ll just stick to bones and the treats from Trader Joe’s. She continues to be beyond spoiled because I’m a sucker and will give her treats for just being cute. And I’ll order any toy online that looks cute or makes me giggle. Case in point: her current favorite toy is a plush squeaky avocado that cracks me up.
Anyway, here’s to hoping Scout will get to fulfill her destiny of becoming a winery dog someday.
xoxo,
J
