I’ve said it a million times already, but summer is already here in DC. It’s super hot and humid and I’m already sticky just from walking the few blocks from the metro to the office. When I first moved to the east coast I was shocked by the humidity–that’s not really a thing that exists in California or Oregon. And one of the worst parts about humidity for me is that it wrecks my hair. For the first spring and summer I basically wore my hair in a bun the entire time because I couldn’t figure out what to do with it that would prevent my hair from immediately frizzing and ruining whatever style I had put it in in the morning.
Thankfully, a few years ago I was wandering the minis section at Sephora and found a travel size hairspray that claimed to shield your hair from humidity. I was pretty desperate so I figured I’d try it out. Wow am I glad I did.
My secret weapon for my hair in the summer is Living Proof’s No Frizz Humidity Shield. I get it at Sephora because I like their rewards program but you can also buy it at Ulta and probably Amazon if we’re being honest. This is literally the only product that has done anything to prevent my hair from frizzing in the humidity. I’ve tried so many things–basically any shampoo or conditioner that advertises itself as frizz protection (that isn’t outrageously expensive), but this is the real deal.
A few notes on this spray because I did notice that the reviews on Sephora’s site are pretty mixed.
- It’s not a hairspray. So it won’t hold your hair in whatever updo you put it in. You’ll still need to finish with a hairspray.
- This product really does work best when you follow the directions. I have it next to me as I’m straightening or curling my hair and I spray each section of my hair after I finish heat styling it. It doesn’t work nearly as well if you just give the top layer of your hair a quick mist after you’re done styling. It really needs to be throughout your hair.
In addition to this humidity shield spray there are a few other styles I tend to do my hair in during the humid months so that I don’t look like a hot, sticky mess. I keep these invisibobble hair ties in all of my purses so that I can put my hair up during a walk or commute and then take it back down when I get to work or dinner or drinks or whatever. They’re the only hair ties that I’ve found that are actually being honest when they claim to not leave a dent in your hair when you take it down. (I even use them when my hair is wet and there’s no dent when I take it down!)
Finally, I am a huge fan of the recent trend of putting scarves and bandannas in your hair. It’s an easy way to make a ponytail or bun look put together and fancy enough for work or an event. My favorites are from Madewell. Pro-tip: wait for a sale and then grab some of the silk bandannas or scarves for cheaper. I ended up getting some for like half off because I waited.
If you don’t live where it’s humid or if you don’t have long hair bless you for reading this post anyway! But I think these are still useful tips for summer anywhere if you don’t want to look as sweaty as you feel.
