It’s the beginning June, which means we’re now officially enjoying the summer months (unless you live in DC, in which case we’ve been unfortunately feeling the 90+ degree heat for a while now). But, while it may only get warmer it does mean we get to enjoy what summer on the east coast offers! … FIREFLIES!
That’s right, I’m talking about the little lightening bugs (as some call them). When Jos and I first moved to the east coast we lived in Harrisburg, PA — which was the first time being east of the Mississippi River. That also meant the first time seeing fireflies. You see, on the west coast we don’t have them. And since I’ve never spent a summer on the east coast, I had never seen them before.
Now, it’s been 4+ years of living over here and I still get excited when I see them! The first summer living here, Jos and I would spend the nights watching them and trying to catch them. That is, until we looked up (Jos looked up) what they looked like not lit up. After seeing what they looked like, Jos absolutely abstained from attempting to catch them. Now, even though we live in the city, we still see them! You see, our apartment complex is not adjacent to any other buildings, which means we get a bit more animal life than we would if we lived in a high rise.
In fact, even 4+ years later and we still get excited (it’s like snow, but in the summer time). And while it may not be the bugs themselves, it’s what the bugs represent that excites us. When you see the bugs, it means BBQs, it means pools, it means rooftop patios and outdoor bars. So yes, we very much remain excited when we see the 10 million lightening bugs light up each night. And until you see them up close, you can’t really grasp just how they make you feel — like a kid, no matter your age.
