Today I saw a tweet that asked people to share the five movies to watch to get to know you. Of course I’m a sucker for those kinds of tweets so I immediately responded with mine, but I only have four:
- Legally Blonde
- Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde
- When Harry Met Sally
- Shrek
I’ll be the first to admit that they look pretty silly in that list–Shrek is truly a wild card in a sea of what most people would call chick flicky romcoms. But honestly, each of these movies really did teach me things about myself and can tell you so many things about me.
Legally Blonde is probably the movie that actually did make me want to go to law school. If you ask my parents they’ll probably say that they always knew I was going to be a lawyer because I argue so much and turn everything into a debate. But I didn’t know I wanted to go to law school until halfway through college. And watching Legally Blonde an absurd number of times likely helped me make that decision because it reassured me that I could still be girly and love pink and have fun and be smart and succeed in law school. This was also an important reminder when I was suffering through law school–particularly that liking to get dressed up and have fun didn’t make me any less smart.
Legally Blonde 2 reaffirmed that I didn’t have to practice law to make use of my law degree and showed me that it wasn’t silly to want to work in politics instead of a law firm. And that you might be an idealist if you think working in politics can make positive change, but it also doesn’t make you wrong. Plus this movie is extremely comforting when I’m putting on my bright pink coat to go to work in a sea of black jackets on the metro and the sidewalk here in DC.
When Harry Met Sally is one of my all-time favorite movies. I LOVE that Sally is so independent and sure of herself and not ashamed to demand that things be just as she likes them. I love that Harry is so silly and comforting and hypes Sally up. I love Sally’s weird 80s masculine wardrobe. I love that Harry and Sally hate each other, are best friends, and then fall in love. It’s the cutest movie ever and I watch it every time I’m in a bad mood. (I also bought B a beautiful print of one of my favorite scenes in the movie for Christmas this year, so the obsession is real.)
Finally, Shrek. If you want to know a lot about my sense of humor this is the movie you need to watch–and then you need to ask yourself why in the world you haven’t watched this cinematic masterpiece before. (This is not a joke.) When I was younger I was able to recite the entire movie script with my sister and her best friend. (A fact that we embarrassingly tried to prove during a camping trip before the adults jumped in and stopped us.) The jokes are hilarious, the casting is amazing, the soundtrack is A+, seriously this movie is so perfect. And I’ve been known to make these very jokes in my daily life.
