Hi friends!
As you know if you read my last post, I moved over the weekend! Still getting settled in this new space (and buying furniture since there’s SO. MUCH. SPACE.), but I wanted to share some things that made moving a bit easier and slightly less stressful.
First up is definitely Lend a Box. This is a brilliant service that lets you rent reusable plastic crates and packing materials for your move! They drop off the boxes at your home, give you a week (or more, if you need it), and then come a pick them up from your new place. The boxes come with their own dollies for transportation and they even have kitchen kits that come with glass and plate separators. Like seriously, cannot recommend this type of service enough. It was super affordable–probably worked out to be about the same as buying all of the boxes and packing materials would’ve been. And as a bonus, it’s environmentally friendly and it made it so easy for our movers.
Which brings me to number two: hire movers. I did this when I moved from Pennsylvania to DC and it’s a game changer. I’m never moving without professionals ever again. When B and I started looking for new places in DC we knew that we were going to be hiring movers so we just factored it into our budget. But it’s also way less expensive than I thought it would be the first time I hired movers. (Plus, in general I’m a big believer in hiring professionals to do things–there’s a reason why they’re professionals.) We managed to move everything in less than three hours because of our amazing movers!
Finally, once we decided on a place I made a big checklist in my bullet journal of everything we had to do, which was beyond helpful. Sharing an edited version of the list here, because I think it’s pretty applicable to most moves.
- sign lease
- hire movers (get quotes and availability from different companies)
- rent boxes
- move utilities
- internet
- electricity
- gas
- renter’s insurance
- change address:
- DMV
- post office (mail forwarding)
- bank
- car insurance
- any subscriptions you have
- insurance/health care/student loans
- pack
- donate items (as I pack I go through and make a donate pile)
- share new address:
- work
- family
- friends
So there you have it! These three things really helped ease my anxiety about moving (of course they didn’t eliminate it, but they really did help).
Any questions about moving? Let me know!
xoxo,
J
