If you follow pretty much any chef (or a certain section of influencers) you’ll have seen Red Clay hot sauce. I’ve been intrigued by the hot sauce and finally broke down and ordered it after I saw Molly Baz used it for making Bloody Marys (more on that later, I promise). And because I love hot sauce and I love a taste test, I ordered the Spicy Whole Shebang set. Which obviously meant I had to figure out how to properly taste test these babies. And since I also wanted to do a comparison of hot honeys I thought that fried chicken would be the best vehicle for this adventure.
So, here are the results:
Hot honey
So I did this tasting adventure with B and our friend Lindsay (our pod buddy). Lindsay and I both agreed that the Red Clay Hot Hot Honey is spicier than Mike’s Hot Honey, but B disagreed. We all loved the Red Clay Hot Hot honey but also think that the spice level isn’t high enough to justify two “hots”, so if you’re looking for hot honey for sure go with the “hot hot” and skip the regular hot. But it’s delicious and great on fried chicken, pizza, etc.
Verde Hot Sauce
Okay this one is amazing. Definitely not the right hot sauce for fried chicken though so don’t make the same mistake I did. The label recommends using it on eggs and that’s exactly what you should do. I also put this on one of my nourish bowls for lunch and it was great. (Extra delicious on roasted sweet potatoes.)
Original Hot Sauce
This is the OG–the one that all the chefs and influencers use. This is the hot sauce that Molly Baz uses for her Bloodies. It’s the classic for a reason: it’s wonderful. Not too hot, but great flavor. A great place to start, especially if you’re not into spicy spicy hot sauce.
Carolina Hot Sauce
Also delicious. Great on fried chicken. A utility player. Spicier than the original hot sauce but definitely not too spicy. B’s favorite hot sauce of the bunch.
Habanero Hot Sauce
This one is my favorite of the group. Definitely the spiciest but still not too overwhelming. Perfect for tacos.
(Note: all of these hot sauces kind of remind me of Tabasco because of their consistency–they’re a million times better in flavor–but they have the same thin vinegar-y consistency that means you gotta SHAKE to get it out of the bottle. Just a warning.)
All of this to say: these are easily becoming my favorite hot sauces. I get the hype, it is deserved. If you were on the fence about trying these I think you should definitely do it!
Is there anything you think I should try? A hot sauce brand you LOVE? Let me know!
xoxo,
J
