Today is International Women’s Day. It’s also almost the one year mark of the stay at home order here in Washington DC. Both of those things have me thinking about my community, and more specifically about the women in my life. I would be nowhere without these women. Without their love and support and encouragement and laughter and tough love. And I’ve been missing them deeply over this past year.
To the women who I’ve known for years, even decades, who I didn’t get to see daily even when the world was open but who I still hold in my heart. The friendships that pick up right where they left off when we do get to hug each other and share laughter and drinks and space: I love you.
To the women who I have worked with fighting every day to make this country and this world a better and more just place: I love you. I’m thankful to be in this fight with you.
To the women who raised me and loved me and encouraged me to become who I am today: I love you.
To the women who became my sisters–whether through blood, or marriage, or vows, or sweat and tears–I love you.
To the women who sweat next to me in a workout class (in person or via Zoom) and then take that friendship outside of class and into the world: I love you (and I feel your pain through a tough workout).
To the women who listen to me angry cry about shitty jobs and shitty men and shitty anything and offer support, advice, a hug, a drink, and even just an ear: I love you.
To the women who love me enough to tell me when I’m wrong and help me grow and learn: I love you.
To the women who have joined me in community over Zoom cocktail classes, Lounge gatherings, Spark workouts. Women who have become my friends even though we’ve never met in person: I love you.
To the women in the group chats who are always there to hype or scream or cry or share funny gifs: I love you.
To the women I met in bars and bathrooms and locker rooms and concerts and everywhere that doesn’t currently exist: I love you.
To the women who I haven’t yet met but are out there holding up and supporting other women: I love you.
xoxo,
J
